Our entry for an architectural design competition in Bulgaria for an affordable, low energy family house. Our passivhaus design incorporated features of the local vernacular, such as the irregular window openings, large roof overhangs and the use of local materials.
A striking roof overhang on the West elevation exaggerates the concept of a thick element wrapping over the building, also providing solar shading in the afternoon/evening. This concept echoes the form of many buildings in Lozen which feature a stepped façade with large overhangs.
We were awarded 2nd place and received an honourable mention.
Judges in the competition said that our entry featured “beautiful sustainable design in material and construction”, and they praised the details of the facades and the “wonderful” presentation of the project.
